Winston Salem State University Student Government Association (SGA) is working to make the school a better place, and a comfortable environment to excel in learning.
Winston Salem State University has been implementing SGA and recruiting new members of the committee for an astounding 60 years now. Starting in 1966, the school created the organization with the desire to provide a sense of governing and advocacy for the students on campus. This organization led to a constitution being written to emplace rules for how this government should be run, and what was considered acceptable and unacceptable. With that being said, SGA still strives to keep our students happy in 2025 while supporting the success of our school.
Overseer of campus organizations and student life director Kambre Stephens says student SGA has made not just his life easier by alleviating pressure and the ability to delegate power, but also understanding these students will be leaders for all on campus, and knowing WSSU is in good hands under these young men and women. “Any opportunity that we have presented in front of them; they have put their best foot forward in all that they do.” SGA member Joshua Roseboro, the director of public relations for student organizations, implores that “without the students we wouldn't be in the position we are in”. Explaining how SGA still acts as a voice for many students today, Josh gives us a better understanding of how the board works in the best interest of the students and wants to see the student population happy, and change. “We wanted everything to be new because we wanted to start with the problem at hand versus the solution. A lot of the time, people will approach things, and they will just have a solution, but they are not really looking at where the problem is coming from itself. “
School Photographer and content creator Josiah Brown brings an understanding of how student government creates opportunities for not just his own success but other students in other fields as well. “They help in many ways such as opportunities and different network connections made through their events, service, and leadership gathering. They affect not only my work but my future.” The WSSU Student government association works to help make the campus a happier place and provide students with the academic success tools they need to be successful now, and outside of campus in the future.
