Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) hosted its annual Stomp the Yard: Homecoming Step Show and Concert on October 17, 2025, at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The event was a lively celebration of tradition, talent, and Ram pride, featuring unforgettable performances and energetic competition.
The step show was hosted by WSSU alumni Chico Bean, who kept the crowd entertained with his signature humor and school spirit. Following the competition, the concert portion featured live performances from headliners Mariah the Scientist and K Camp, keeping the energy high with music that had everyone singing along and up on their feet.
Audience reactions to the step show varied. “I just feel like the step show was a little too long,” said student Amani Willoughby. On the other hand, Ashley Pointer, a WSSU senior, shared, “I really enjoyed the step show. The themes were very creative. What stood out to me was the Squid Game theme and the zombies theme.”
Despite differing opinions, most attendees agreed that the experience was well worth the cost. Student tickets were priced at $70, which included both the step show and concert. “I loved the performances,” said Adia Cordova. “They were all very creative and full of energy.”
At the end of the night, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. took home win for the 2025 step show.
Overall, WSSU’s 2025 Stomp the Yard was a night to remember. It was a true showcase of campus pride, culture, and community spirit. Those who missed it will surely be counting down the days until next year’s show.
