Out and About in Winston

Winston-Salem State University students don’t have to travel far to support Black-owned businesses that strengthen the local economy and community. From retail to entrepreneurship resources, several spots near campus offer opportunities to shop, connect and grow professionally. Northside Boutique, located in the city’s historic Northside neighborhood, offers trendy fashion, accessories and unique statement pieces. The boutique has become a community staple, giving students a stylish option while supporting local Black entrepreneurship. The Winston-Salem Black Chamber of Commerce supports Black entrepreneurs across the city and hosts networking events that benefit students interested in business, marketing and leadership. Nearby, the Women’s Business Center of Winston-Salem provides coaching and development resources for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Longstanding businesses like Wyatt & Dad Cobbler Company highlight the legacy of Black entrepreneurship in the area, offering specialized shoe and leather repair services.

By supporting these businesses, WSSU students help circulate dollars within the community while building connections beyond campus. Whether shopping locally or attending professional events, students have meaningful ways to invest in and celebrate Black-owned enterprises close to home.
