How Artificial Intelligence is changing the WSSU Academic Space
Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping college classrooms, changing how
students study, complete assignments and manage their time. What looked like a
traditional classroom just a few years ago has evolved as AI tools become more
common in higher education. Students and professors are increasingly using AI for
writing assistance, brainstorming, automated grading and personalized study
support. While the technology offers convenience and efficiency, it has also raised
ongoing questions about academic integrity and appropriate use. Xavier Stabler, a
junior mass communications major, Mr. Rams TV and co-creator of the Winston
Wire, said his use of AI has steadily increased. “My use of AI honestly has gone
up,” Stabler said. “I use it mainly for my creative thinking just basically making
sure what I have going on in my head makes sense on paper.” For some students,
AI serves more as an organizational tool than an academic shortcut. Kaaylah
Hawkins, a junior clinical labs major and member of the marching band, said AI
helps her manage her busy schedule. “I mainly use AI more on the schedule side,”
Hawkins said. “Since I’m in band, I have to set my time out which can get tricky,
so I have AI to help. Also, my professors usually shun upon AI in the labs, so we
don’t use it that often.” Faculty members are also adjusting to the growing
presence of AI in coursework. Ms. Johnson, writing instructor and coordinator of
the Writing and Communications Center, said the impact of AI depends largely on
how students choose to use it. “I think it depends on how it’s used,” Johnson said.
“Students can always just ask AI for the answer, but if it’s used effectively like
asking AI the prompt and getting ideas, not just the answer I think that’s a
successful use of it.” As AI continues to expand in higher education, classrooms
are adapting. The technology can speed up tasks, assist with idea development and
provide additional support for students. At the same time, both students and
instructors are navigating how to use these tools responsibly while maintaining
academic integrity. AI’s role in college classrooms is still developing, but its
presence is already changing the way students learn and complete their work.
