Rams are readying themselves for the new job market

Winston Salem Winston-Salem State University’s Fall 2025 Career Expo is a chance for students to connect with recruiters, exploring internships and job opportunities. However, there has come to be some concerns with many students saying the university is not doing enough to make sure all majors benefit equally.

Many interviewed students admitted they were not first informed of the event by WSSU’s Career Development Services, who run and manage the event, but instead their peers and campus staff. “I was first made aware of the expo by my RA as a freshman year, but as a freshman, I wasn’t very sure how to approach it.” Said Aaron Hocutt, a Junior Sports Management major.

With knowledge of the event not being the only problem, students also raised concerns about which majors are prioritized. Career prep workshops and networking opportunities are often geared toward business, STEM, and Health Sciences, leaving students in Arts and Social Sciences feeling separate from the event. “Invite more people that are from the lower fields … So more people in the art field or more people just in the lesser known areas to entice some of those majors that aren’t as big to go,” said Trevian Herring, a Junior Art major.

Ned Moultrie, the Coordinator of Employee Relations at Career Development Services explained that “Career development services is actively working to continue to diversify the representation at the career fair.” When asked about opportunities for Art & Entertainment majors at the Career Fair he explained that more events such as the Elevate Tour Membership would occur on campus to help support them.
