K.R. Williams Renovations

Winston-Salem State University is in the active construction phase of a major renovation and

expansion of the K.R. Williams Auditorium. Construction began in May 2024, and interior

demolition is nearing completion, according to University architect Sam Loso. The project is

expected to be completed in fall 2027.

The renovation will nearly double the size of the building, expanding its footprint and

modernizing its facilities. During early site work, crews discovered abandoned utilities from a

1950s neighborhood beneath the site. The finding required additional work before construction

could continue.

The upgraded facility will include a new plenum system, an orchestra pit, expanded gallery

space, a 90-person lecture hall, a drawing studio and updated dressing rooms. Loso said the goal

is to transform the auditorium into a high-quality performance space that better serves students

and the campus community.

Originally built in 1975 and named after longtime Chancellor Kenneth R. Williams, the

auditorium has hosted performances, convocations and major campus events for nearly 50 years.

Students say the improvements will enhance academic and creative opportunities. Autumn

Jackson said expanded performance and lecture spaces will help students in arts and

communications programs gain hands-on experience in a more professional environment.

Joselyn Smith Petty added that because many major campus events are held in the auditorium,

updating the space will improve comfort and strengthen student engagement.
