At Winston-Salem State University, fashion is more than what you wear; it’s how you show up, represent yourself, and tell your story without saying a word. Whether it's a casual day walking to class or a significant event like Ram Fest, students on the yard always find new ways to express themselves through their style.
Over the past few years, WSSU fashion has started to evolve in a big way. Students are mixing high-end streetwear with thrifted gems, pairing Jordans with vintage tees, and showing off bold hairstyles and creative accessories that demand attention. Senior Tachai Miller put it simply: "WSSU’s fashion is different. You have to be fresh, but it’s not about name brands but how you put it together."
Local businesses and campus organizations are noticing the shift, too. Once mainly stocked with traditional gear, the university's Spirit Store has expanded its lineup to include trendier pieces like cropped hoodies, techwear jackets, and limited-edition drops that feel right at home with what students are already rocking. Organizations like the Campus Activities Board (CAB) have even started hosting fashion shows as significant events, giving students a chance to show off their creativity and gain business opportunities because of their style.
Off-campus businesses are also tapping into WSSU’s growing fashion culture. Pop-up shops hosted by local brands and alumni-owned businesses are becoming regular parts of campus events. SeniorDayze runs her custom T-shirt brand and said, "There’s a real energy around fashion here. Small businesses like mine thrive during events like Homecoming or Ram Fest because people always look for something original to wear."
Fashion shows and creative showcases are also becoming bigger deals on campus. Modeling troupes like House of RAMs have been gaining attention for their bold runway walks and edgy looks, often setting the tone for what’s trending at WSSU. Junior Gionna Laster, a member of the Epiphany Modeling troupe, explained, "We’re trying to push boundaries. WSSU students have so much style, and it deserves a spotlight."
As WSSU students continue experimenting with their looks, one thing is clear: the yard is a runway every day. Whether you’re dripping in designer or flexing a Goodwill find, it’s all about confidence, individuality, and that unmistakable Ram pride.
In the words of sophomore Ludarius Blackman, "At WSSU, fashion is whatever you make it. Just be yourself and ensure you’re stepping when you do it."
