Homecoming at Winston-Salem State University is a weekend full of school spirit, packed stands, and unforgettable halftime performances. But behind the cheers and precision lies in months of preparation by the WSSU Marching Band.

Dr. Michael Magruder, WSSU Band director of 21 years,, said Homecoming requires a level of effort unlike any other performance. “Our performances must not only meet expectations but exceed them. We work hard all year, but for Homecoming, we put forth a special effort,”

Planning starts early, with the band discussing ideas for music and routines all year. Serious preparation ramps up about two weeks before Homecoming, using a team management approach to select music and routines that balance tradition with innovation. Magruder emphasized the importance of tradition claiming “We combine old school and new school. Our goal is to entertain everyone, students, alumni, and fans alike. Songs like ‘Get Up’ are staples that bring alumni back year after year.”

Drum major Christopher Wilson plays a key role in keeping the band focused and motivated. “Homecoming week is intense, but stepping onto the field is exhilarating,” he said. “Seeing alumni, family, and students enjoy the performance makes all the long hours worth it.” His rehearsals include balancing outside drill work with stand music, often providing short breaks with well-known songs to keep energy high.

Drumline section leader Fashad  Morrison described the long nights his section endures stating “We spend hours tuning, running drills, and repeating tricky sections until everyone is on the same page,” he said. “Mistakes are broken down piece by piece. Pep talks, quick brain breaks, and small rewards keep us motivated.”

The preparation demands physical stamina, focus, and mental resilience, but the students embrace it. “Homecoming is more than music and marching,” Magruder said. “It’s a celebration of tradition, pride, and energy and it’s worth every effort.”

As students perfect each note, step, and routine, the WSSU Marching Band ensures that every Homecoming show reflects school pride, dedication, and the Ram spirit.
