While often associated with high-energy gameplay and viral internet moments, Twitch—the world’s leading live-streaming platform—is quietly becoming a powerful tool for connection, creativity, and opportunity. At Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), students find that Twitch isn’t just entertainment but empowerment.

Twitch allows users to stream or watch live content beyond gaming, including music, art, educational content, and “in real life” (IRL) moments. At its core, Twitch is a community builder, helping users forge friendships and meaningful social bonds. For students at WSSU, that sense of community is especially valuable.

“It’s not just about watching someone play a game,” says one regular Twitch viewer. “It’s about feeling like you belong, laughing with others, and participating in real conversations. Some of my closest friends have been made through Twitch.”

WSSU student Winston Ross is one of several students who are leveraging Twitch’s platform. A dedicated streamer, Ross uses Twitch as both a creative outlet and a financial opportunity. “Twitch gives me an escape from the real world,” he shared. “It’s something I can put all my energy into. And now, I’ve reached a point where I’m monetized. People subscribe to me, and that’s helping ease the stress of money.”

Ross’ experience mirrors a growing trend: college students turning to Twitch not just for fun, but for income, mental wellness, and career building. With monetization, sponsorships, and donations, many students are finding sustainable ways to support themselves while doing something they love.

When asked how Twitch changes society, Ross pointed to its cultural shift: “People are watching Twitch instead of traditional TV. Kai Cenat alone pulls 100,000 live viewers. It’s like watching a major TV broadcast. Except now, it’s on your phone or laptop.”

Beyond individual benefits, Twitch is also a hub for philanthropy. Streamers frequently host charity events, using their platforms to raise awareness and money for causes they care about. Organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Extra Life have raised millions through Twitch-based fundraisers.

At WSSU, Twitch is proving it’s more than a digital stage. It is a space for students to connect, grow, and give back. As the platform continues to evolve, its presence on campus underscores a powerful shift: from streaming for fun to streaming for purpose.
