WSSU Homecoming 2025 Kicks Off with a Soul-Stirring Gospel Fest

Justin Alston

The night was filled with worship, harmony, and joy as the choirs from across North Carolina, including Shaw University, UNC Greensboro, North Carolina Central, and WSSU’s Inspirational Voices Choir, came together to celebrate faith and community. Each group brought its own soulful sound, creating an atmosphere of unity that set the tone for the week ahead.

Behind the Music

Inspirational Voices Student Director, Brea Marshall- Birmingham, said that preparing for Gospel Fest takes dedication and teamwork. “It’s a team effort from start to finish. It takes time, patience, and a lot of dedication.” Choosing songs is key, balancing old and new gospel styles. “We’re vessels doing this for a purpose bigger than ourselves,” and “Seeing them sing with passion and joy makes my heart so happy,” she added.

Student Reflection

The energy extended beyond the stage. Students and community members filled Gaines with excitement and praise. Aryel Mitchel, a junior pre-nursing major, said the event united the campus. “Gospel Fest really brings our WSSU community together,” she said. “It's a time to reflect, recharge, and feel inspired.” Her favorite part is when the audience joins in on the songs. “It wasn't just a performance, it felt like church.”

A Return to Praise

After several years away, Gospel Fest made a heartfelt return. Adriana Bell, a choir member, said, “This was the first Gospel Fest since the pandemic; we wanted to remind people that God is always on your side.” Former member Sydney Gibson added, “We practiced hard, but spiritual preparation mattered most; we prayed and encouraged each other.”

Faith. Unity. Celebration.

As the final note rang out across C.E. Gaines, the crowd was left inspired and energized, a reminder of what Homecoming at WSSU is truly about: Faith, Unity, and Celebration. With Homecoming week officially underway, Gospel Fest 2025 set the tone for a week filled with tradition, fellowship, and Ram Pride.
