Greeks Hold a Meeting on Student Mental Wellness

Winston Salem--At Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) annual Greek Summit, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. Joined Forces to host a campus-wide mental health awareness event later this semester. The initiative will feature peer-led workshops, student testimonies, and counseling resources designed to break stigma and create a supportive environment for students.

“Mental health is something that a lot of students struggle with silently.” said Hezekiah Crews, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. “We wanted to create a space where students feel seen, supported, and heard.”

Organizers say the collaboration is also meant to challenge stereotypes about Greek life. “This is bigger than one organization,” Crews explained. “When Greeks come together for causes that matter, it shows the campus and the larger community that we are more than stepping, parties, and stereotypes.”

Zoe Suggs, a senior nursing major and president of Chi Eta Phi, said the event reflects the organizations’ shared commitment to service. “By standing together, we’re showing that mental health matters and that Greeks truly care about one another.”

Counseling “staff agrees” the initiative fills a vital need on campus. Mrs. Keya Glover, a counselor at WSSU’s University Wellness Center, said many students face challenges with anxiety, depression, and burnout but hesitate to seek support. “The biggest barrier is the stigma many students feel like admitting they need help makes them weak,” Glover said. “Events like this send the opposite message: that seeking help is a strength. My hope is that students leave knowing they are not alone, and that support is available, both from their peers and from trained professionals.”
