Lighting of the Sign Kicks Off WSSU Homecoming Week with Energy and Pride

Winston-Salem, N.C. — The Winston-Salem State University community came

together Monday evening on the practice field to celebrate one of the most anticipated

traditions of the year — the annual Lighting of the Homecoming Sign. The event

marked the official start of Homecoming Week and filled the air with Ram pride, music,

and excitement. This year’s sign was displayed as a bright digital screen on the stage,

creating an eye-catching backdrop for the night’s performances. The event featured

powerful showcases from the Red Sea of Sound and the WSSU Powerhouse of Red

and White, whose drum lines and dancers had the crowd cheering and chanting along.

The celebration also included vibrant performances from the Fusion Dance Team and

the Epiphany Modeling Troupe, each bringing their own spark to the stage. A special

appearance from a proud WSSU alum added to the night’s spirit, reminding students

of the legacy they carry forward. For many students, the lighting of the sign represents

more than just a tradition—it’s a symbol of unity and campus pride. “Seeing the sign

light up gives me chills every time,” said Alexandria Chandler, a junior social work

major. “It’s like the whole campus comes alive in that moment. You can really feel how

much this school means to everyone here.”

Student G’La Dunn shared similar excitement. “This event always brings us together.

We’re all from different places, but when that sign lights up, it feels like home,” Dunn said.

“It’s the best way to kick off Homecoming Week.” As the digital sign illuminated the night

sky in bright red and white, students erupted in applause and song, setting the tone for

a week full of celebration, community, and Ram spirit that continues to define the WSSU

experience
