Coffee that is Good to the Last Drop

A new Starbucks has opened on Winston-Salem State University’s campus, becoming more than just a coffee spot, it’s emerging as a central hub for students, faculty, and staff. The university celebrated the grand opening on the morning of August 28, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Hill Hall at 10:30 a.m. Chancellor Brown joined students, faculty, and staff to officially launch the campus café, marking a new addition to WSSU’s student experience and campus life.

The arrival of Starbucks is significant for WSSU, marking the addition of one of the world’s most recognized brands to campus dining. For many students, the café provides not only coffee and snacks, but also a space to study, meet friends, or take a break between classes.

Two students shared why the café has already become part of their routines. Kamari Strong stated that, “I enjoy starting my mornings with a stop at Starbucks before heading to class and plans to make it a regular habit.” Fellow student Olivia Cody expressed her excitement as well, “I really enjoy meeting friends there to grab drinks and catch up before class”.

To get a full picture of the café’s impact, Starbucks employees also weighed in. Workers at the Hill Hall location said they have quickly seen how much the café means to the campus community. Barista Janyissa Bannister mentioned “my favorite part of the job is seeing students smile each day, knowing they’re about to enjoy a good cup of coffee”.

The new Starbucks highlights WSSU’s commitment to help grow campus amenities while also raising questions about identity, access, and balance. Whether for a quick caffeine fix, a social hangout, or a long study session, the café is already making its mark on student life at WSSU.
