Winston Salem State University students are preparing for a busy March as campaign season for student leadership positions takes center stage on campus. Candidates for roles such as the Royal Court and student government will hold campaign rallies, giving students the chance to meet them, learn their platforms, and cast their votes.

During the campaign rally, everybody that’s running for a position has their own table,” said Jordyan Howell, organization and office manager of Student Activities and Engagement. “They speak about who they are, what they want to do, and why you should vote for them.”

Karee Brown Jones, coordinator of student life and Greek affairs, said the spring calendar is carefully planned to balance student led campaigns with university sponsored events. “We work to make sure each event fits within the office layout and that programming isn’t overlapping,” Brown Jones said.

Howell emphasized that participating in campus elections also prepares students for civic responsibility in the real world. “It’s really important because it helps students understand the power of voting,” she said. “By learning how to evaluate candidates, compare platforms, and make informed choices here on campus, they’re practicing skills they’ll use once they’re voting in local, state, and national elections.”

Despite early semesters, disruptions from snow days, both Jones and Howell said the March campaign events will give students opportunities to connect with leaders, explore campus organizations, and engage in meaningful civic practice. “The spring semester is fun, very heavy in engagement, and a time of renewal,” Howell said.
