Degrees at a Cost

A recent tuition increase across the University of North Carolina System is creating added financial stress for many students, especially those attending from out of state.

At Winston-Salem State University, students say the rising costs are forcing them to make tougher financial decisions. Arianna Kegler, an out-of-state student from Connecticut, said the increase has added pressure on both her and her family. “It’s been a little stressful… any increase just adds more pressure,” she explained.

Kegler has made small adjustments to her daily life, including being more cautious with spending and thinking about increasing her work hours. She said she has considered picking up another job to keep up with expenses.

Although she believes her education is important for her future, the cost still raises doubts at times. “I definitely think it is worth it… but it’s hard not to question it,” Kegler said. She also admitted that transferring has crossed her mind because of the cost, but she remains committed to finishing her degree at WSSU.

Financial aid offices are also seeing the impact. Rashaan Turner, a financial aid counselor at WSSU, says more students are reaching out for help. He explained that resources such as scholarships, grants, payment plans, and emergency aid are available, but they do not always fully cover rising tuition costs.

Turner added that aid packages may increase slightly, but not enough to match tuition hikes. While enrollment has remained fairly stable, he noted growing concern among students about affordability.

As costs continue to rise, students like Kegler are working to balance their academic goals with financial pressure, raising ongoing questions about the long-term accessibility of higher education.
