Spring Break Travel Issues

What should have been a week of sun, rest, and release for college students across the country has instead turned into a case study in travel system strain, as flight delays, overcrowded buses, and last-minute cancellations disrupted spring break plans from coast to coast. High gas prices, long distance travels, expensive train tickets, and plane delays have caused spring break travel issues.

Student Kyndal Farver; Junior at Winston-Salem State University, has expressed how high gas prices are “ I fill up my gas tank before I leave Winston to go to Washington DC. That’s $55 for 450 miles. Then I’ll have to fill it up some more if I want to visit places in DC. On the way back home, I’ll have to spend $50 more on gas. Spending over $100 in gas is very frustrating.” Says Farver.  Gas prices affect college students tremendously especially, those  who do not have a job.

Nadia Heggs takes the train to Alexandria, VA for spring break to visit family. Heggs states, “ A train ticket home and back to Winston is over $200. Not to mention I have to take an uber from and to the train station.” Train tickets that high can hold back people from visiting families because of high prices that are over $200.

“Students have access to forms for which they can stay on campus for free over spring break. Also students can speak with academic counselors, student affairs, and etc to make accommodations if students are unable to come back to school in time or with any other issues.” This is from Chyanne White a  Case Manager for Health & Student Wellbeing at Winston- Salem State University.

Tuition looks low on paper, the cost to attend school plus the cost to just visit their loved ones in different states, adds an extra burden to students.
